Diablo 4 Rebirth gives seasonal players a convenient way to reuse an existing character while starting fresh in a new season. Instead of permanently deleting a favorite hero, you can convert an Eternal Realm character into a Seasonal character and begin again at Level 1. For players who have accumulated plenty of D4 items over several seasons, however, Rebirth requires some preparation before confirming the reset.
The main thing to remember is that Rebirth does not function like a simple transfer. Your character keeps its identity, appearance, and certain account-level unlocks, but its equipment and personal inventory do not come along. If you have valuable D4 items sitting on your character when you press Rebirth, you need to move them somewhere safe first.
Rebirth Creates a Fresh Seasonal Character
The purpose of Rebirth is to give players a clean seasonal starting point without forcing them to permanently delete an existing hero. Your character's name, class, and appearance remain the same after the conversion, which makes the feature especially useful if you have a character you like visually or simply want to continue using as your main seasonal identity.
At the same time, the character returns to Level 1. Skill points, Paragon progression, and Glyph levels connected to that character are reset. You should therefore approach Rebirth with the same mindset as creating a new seasonal character.
The difference is that you are keeping the character's identity and several forms of historical information rather than starting with a completely new character slot.
Empty Your Character Before Confirming
The most important preparation step is also the easiest to forget.
Before selecting Rebirth, remove every piece of equipment from your character. Check weapons, armor, accessories, and anything else currently equipped. Then open the character's inventory and move anything valuable into your Eternal Realm stash.
Do not assume that the game will automatically transfer your equipment because you are keeping the same character. It will not.
Anything left equipped or sitting in the character's personal inventory when you complete Rebirth can be permanently deleted. The confirmation warning gives you an opportunity to stop, but it is better to complete your inventory check before reaching that point.
A quick second inspection is worthwhile if you have several valuable pieces of gear. Seasonal transitions are exactly the kind of situation where players can accidentally overlook an item in a forgotten inventory slot.
What Your Character Keeps
Rebirth does not erase every aspect of your character.
Your character's name, class, and exact appearance are preserved. Cosmetic unlocks such as transmogs, mounts, pets, portals, and headstones also remain available. Lifetime statistics and historical information associated with the hero are retained as well.
Account-level progression is treated differently from character-specific power. Altars of Lilith and applicable map Renown bonuses follow the standard seasonal rules, so they are not simply wiped away because you used Rebirth.
This distinction makes Rebirth easier to understand. The game is resetting the character's seasonal power progression while preserving parts of the broader account and character identity.
What Gets Reset
The reset is significant once you look at gameplay progression.
Your character goes back to Level 1, meaning you must level through the new season again. Skill points, Paragon points, and Glyph levels from the previous progression are removed.
Currencies and crafting resources also remain in the Eternal Realm. Gold, Obols, and crafting materials do not become part of your fresh Seasonal progression.
Equipment follows the same principle. Your previous weapons, armor, and other gear do not accompany the rebirthed character.
This is why it is better to think of Rebirth as a fresh seasonal journey rather than a way to upgrade an existing build into the next season.
Give Your Stash a Final Inspection
Moving items into your Eternal Realm stash is the safest way to protect them before Rebirth.
Pay particular attention to rare equipment, build-specific pieces, Unique Items, and anything you might want for an Eternal character later. If you are uncertain whether you still need something, storing it is safer than leaving it on the character.
It is also worth checking that you are looking at your Eternal Realm stash rather than assuming an item is already protected by the seasonal transition.
A little organization before the reset can save you from having to reconstruct your collection later.
Seasonal Stash Requires Attention Too
End-of-season management creates another situation players should understand.
When a Seasonal character moves into the Eternal Realm, items left in the Seasonal stash can be transferred into a temporary, withdrawal-only tab. These items are not automatically merged into your permanent stash.
You need to log into the Eternal Realm and manually withdraw the items you want to keep. Leaving them in temporary storage indefinitely can eventually result in permanent deletion when the relevant deadline passes.
For players who move from one season to another regularly, checking these temporary tabs should become part of the normal end-of-season routine.
Rebirth Is Best Used With a Checklist
Rebirth is convenient when you want to continue using a familiar character without cluttering your character selection screen with old seasonal heroes. The process is straightforward as long as you understand what is actually being reset.
Before confirming, remove all equipment, empty your personal inventory, and make sure valuable possessions are safely stored in the Eternal Realm. Then remember that your new Seasonal character will begin at Level 1 with its character-specific progression reset.
If you are planning a seasonal restart and realize that you still need specific equipment for an Eternal character, moving those D4 items for sale or storage into the appropriate stash before confirming Rebirth can prevent an unnecessary loss.
The feature works well when treated as a fresh beginning rather than a gear-transfer system. A careful inventory check is all it takes to make that fresh start much less stressful.
